Cutting the grass

Aidin – 2007

I find
writing
to be
a bit like
cutting
the grass.

Something
you just
have to do
on a regular
basis
or it gets
far too out of
control
and wild
things
begin to
take root
in it.

  1. The best advice on writing I've ever received came, oddly enough, from Stephen King's book on writing. He said simply, "Writers write." And there you have it.

  2. I love the form of this poem, though I don't necessarily believe that wild things are bad. (Did you ever read the children's book Where the Wild Things Are?) Wild things can be charming, like what I once saw at the Arb with my boyfriend: a pair of iridescent green Japanese beetles humping on a rose…
